Miranda Lambert picks up a hitchhiking armadillo in the opening track of her upcoming album that she describes as “honky tonk as hell.”

The Texas-born singer-songwriter shared a sneak peek of the unreleased anthem on Instagram on Wednesday (August 28). Lambert said “the first time first time I heard the song, I knew immediately that it had to kick off the album.” It’s one of 14 tracks set to appear on Lambert’s Texas-themed record next month.

Lambert pointed out that “on my last album, I was traveling.” Palomino took listeners on a cross-country journey that introduced them to dozens of characters across unique destinations. This time, however, Lambert is remaining grounded in her home state. Postcards from Texas is “honky tonk as hell,” the 2024 Country Icon Award recipient at the People’s Choice Country Awards said as she announced the project.

So far, Lambert kicked off her Postcards from Texas chapter with her fiery revenge anthem, “Wranglers,” followed by “Dammit Randy,” “Alimony” and “No Man’s Land.” She delivered renditions of unreleased songs — including “Armadillo” — during a surprise show in Austin, Texas, where she took the stage almost exactly 20 years after playing her first showcase for a major label at that venue. Lambert said as she shared some photos from that evening that she still has “that same fire that I had 20 years ago and y’all sure do too.”

Postcards from Texas is set to arrive on September 13.
