Hunter Hayes just unleashed what he deemed is “potentially my most controversial song to date.” Hayes debuted his “first ‘f*** you’ song,” kicking the weekend with an upbeat breakup anthem, “Could’ve Been You.” The country singer-songwriter premiered the music video on Friday (August 26).

Hayes splits from his ex as he sings on the new track: “I'm lucky cause it could've been you/ F***ing up all of my plans/ Stealing all the time on my hands/ Want me to want you back but I can’t/ I’m slipping through your fingers like sand.” Hayes’ latest track quickly earned high praise from fans, saying they’re “so incredibly proud” of his work as an artist and can’t wait for what lies ahead.

Hayes called the song “the next page of Red Sky,” his forthcoming project that signals a new chapter, following his complete Wild Blue album (that 16-track collection released in October of 2021). He debuted “Missing You” earlier this summer, a highly-anticipated song that launched “the beginning of a new era and I’m so happy we’re here!” Hayes wrote in a lengthy Instagram caption at the time. “It’s part of a new album, with a new sound, and a new creative spirit that I can’t wait for you to hear more from!”
