Maren Morris recently tweeted that she would send in an audition tape to star in Wicked on Broadway — and the “Circles Around This Town” artist is going for it. Morris posted an a cappella snippet of her test shot for her self-tape audition on TikTok, singing “The Wizard And I” from the beloved musical. She added in her caption: “honestly, even if I don’t get the part, this was so fun ✨”
Morris also posed a question on Twitter for “VOCAL NERDS ONLY,” asking for any tips on the best vocal warmups for the part as she observes how “technically skilled” Elphaba’s part is (a character made famous by the original actress, Idina Menzel). Though she knows “I can do it,” it’s “daunting” to think of several performances in a week. Dozens of “vocal nerds” offered responses to help answer Morris’ question.
The country artist previously said on Twitter that she’s “gonna send an audition tape in for Wicked on Broadway. What the hell. Let’s see what happens.” She added, “I’ve hosted Jimmy Kimmel Live, I’ve sung with (Dolly Parton), flown with the (Thunderbirds), hell, I’ve cut bangs… I’m into taking things head on, fail or succeed. Might as well cut the s*** on being coy. Chase your weird dreams down.”
Morris’ tweets caught the attention of iconic actress Kristin Chenoweth, who starred alongside Menzel in the original production of Wicked as Glinda. Chenoweth quickly offered Morris words of encouragement, retweeting with the uplifting message: “You could play either part. Call m and let’s chat. Come on baby. I got you. And you got the chops.” When Morris credited Chenoweth with inspiring her to try, Chenoweth added “I love you baby,” with a green heart emoji. Watch Morris’ TikTok here:
