Why Brett Young Says His Hit Song Is The 'Happiest Accident In The World'

As Brett Young celebrates the two-year anniversary of releasing one of his biggest hit songs, he revealed that it was actually an “accident.” Young reflected on writing his No. 1 song, “Lady,” with two other writers who have young daughters. It was always meant to serve as a tribute to Young's wife and their first daughter, before she was born.

The country artist wrote the sentimental song simply for his family without the intention of ever recording or releasing it for anyone else. Producer Dann Huff offered to record the song as a baby gift for Young and his wife, Taylor Mills Young. But once he recorded it, everything fell into place. He explained in a statement shared by his record label:

“I had written it. It made Taylor cry. It was really special to me. I got to write it with two other writers who both have little girls, so they were able to really influence and pour themselves into that song. And I played it for Dann Huff, and as a gift to us, as a baby gift, he wanted to record that song for us. So, that’s how it even got recorded. Had that not happened, I don’t know if we would’ve played it for enough people to realize how many people could relate and how many people were really feeling connected to that song. So, it was perfect timing because the pandemic had just started and things had shut down, and my second single off the second record had just peaked and we needed a single. We weren’t gonna be getting into the studio, and we didn’t know how long that was going to be. And we had this song that people were so excited about. So, that was a God thing. It was the happiest accident in the world. It’s one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written.”

Now, Young is a proud father of two. He and his wife welcomed their first daughterPresley Elizabeth, in October 2019. Then, Rowan Marie followed in July 2021. “I thought my heart was maxed out. I usually don’t like to be wrong…… I was wrong,” Young said in a sentimental message at the time, adding: “FYI….. the women in your life are super heroes and you’re the luckiest lady alive.”
