Kenny Chesney is “joining the party” at the 2022 CMT Music Awards, the country music hub announced on Friday morning (April 8). CMT tweeted: “We can’t wait to see what [Kenny Chesney] has in store for us on the #CMTAwards stage!” Cheney is set to perform his smash hit “Beer in Mexico,” marking the first time he’s appeared on the CMT Music Awards stage in seven years, CMT noted.
Chesney, who is gearing up for his next tour, took to his own social media channels to say: “I read your comments and I know there are some very passionate people who are joining us in Tampa on April 23 to be part of flying the @NoShoesNation flag for the first time since 2019, and I can’t wait to hear you roar. But when I realized the #CMTawards were happening next week, I asked if they could find space for us to debut this band a little early and play one of the songs that defined what we do live... and they said, 'C’mon.' I'm excited to officially share with you that we're closing the show April 11 at 8/7c on @cbstv.”
The “Everyone She Knows” artist is the latest to join the star-studded lineup of performers and presenters of the upcoming awards show. The list also includes Jason Aldean with Bryan Adams, Jimmie Allen with Monica and Little Big Town, Thomas Rhett with Riley Green. Walker Hayes, Carrie Underwood, Mickey Guyton with Black Pumas, Old Dominion, Kelsea Ballerini, Kane Brown, Cody Johnson, Miranda Lambert, Little Big Town, Maren Morris and Ryan Hurd, Carly Pearce, Cole Swindell with Lainey Wilson and Keith Urban. Plenty other artists and celebrities are also set to take the stage during the show.
The 2022 CMT Music Awards will air on April 11 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. on the CBS Television Network and stream on Paramount+, hosted live from the Nashville Municipal Auditorium and other locations around the city. CMT will also air an extended cut of the show with an additional 30 minutes of performances and other bonus content on April 15. Earlier this week, CMT announced the all-new Trending Comeback Song of the Year category, aiming to honor iconic country artists and hit songs that “not only stood the test of time but also recently found new popularity.” See the full list of nominees here.
