Jimmy Fallon and Dolly Parton are casting the “haters” aside and cranking up the volume on Christmas music, even though Thanksgiving is still weeks away (and some might even still have their Halloween decorations out, as of the song's release date).
“It’s almost too early for Christmas/ Too soon to be singing this song/ There’s still Halloween decorations/ And haters will say that it’s wrong/ Let’s turn on the lights for Mariah/ Tell Rudolph to shine up his nose/ It’s almost too early for Christmas/ But why don’t we see how it goes?”
Fallon revealed earlier this week that he and Parton teamed up on the new holiday duet, “Almost Too Early For Christmas,” which released Friday (November 4). Fallon explained on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that the inspiration for the song stemmed from the “debate” that arises each year: When can we start playing holiday music?
“They go, ‘Can we listen to holiday music? Can we listen to Christmas music? Is it too early? Can we put on Mariah Carey now?’” Fallon said. “I say, yeah, if it’s good, you should be able to. So, I thought it’d be kind of fun if I put out a song and released it around Halloween for the holidays.”
Keeping with his tradition of releasing a holiday song (last year’s was a collaboration with Ariana Grande and Megan Thee Stallion), Fallon joined forces with the country music legend. He reflected that the pair made plans to turn his song into a duet when he appeared as one of the special guests in Parton’s soon-to-air Christmas special, Dolly Parton’s Mountain Magic Christmas.
Fallon and Parton celebrated the release of their new holiday song by sharing a hilarious throwback photo from one of Parton’s previous appearances on the comedian’s show. Parton previously shared a throwback clip from the 2014 interview, when Parton convinced Fallon to try on one of her wigs (she gushed at that time: “You look cool!”).
