Kelsea Ballerini drew huge reactions from the crowd when she swapped the lyrics to a few of her songs while performing in New York City over the weekend. The “HEARTFIRST” star, who just kicked off her 10-city tour of the same name, seemingly hinted at her split from husband Morgan Evans.
Ballerini, 29, altered the lyrics of “What I Have” from “I got a warm body in bed” to “I got my own body in bed.” She switched up the lyrics during performances of a couple other songs, and included “Doin’ My Best” in the setlist. That song, included on Ballerini’s new album Subject To Change, appears to reference her relationship troubles with Evans during the pandemic: “2020 was a weird year/ Album dropped at a weird time/ Ain't the homecoming queen, but better believe I cried/ And therapy for one turned/ Into therapy for two/ When you get married that young, you got a lotta s*** you gotta get through.”
Ballerini married Evans in 2017, and would have celebrated their five-year wedding anniversary this December. She shared a note to her fans last month, revealing on her Instagram story that she and Evans opted for a divorce. She wrote at the time: “Friends, I’ve always tried my best to share my life with you in a real and vulnerable way, while also protecting layers of my personal life as they unfold. This is now public record so I wanted you to hear from me directly that I am going through a divorce. This deeply difficult decision is the result of a journey of love, growth, and effort that ultimately has come to an end. It’s hard to find the words here…but I feel extremely grateful for the years of marriage to Morgan and hopeful for the next seasons. With very active schedules coming up, please be mindful that we are both fragile, actively healing, and showing up the best we can. Kels.”
Evans, 37, spoke out in a message on his own Instagram story later the same day: “I am very sad to confirm that after almost 5 years of marriage, Kelsea and I are parting ways. I wish it were otherwise but sadly it is not.” Evans seemed to reference the divorce on Instagram earlier this month. He wrote in a caption, in part, as he shared a photo from a recent performance: “Despite the sadness, I feel very grateful, and want to say a huge thank-you to you all for the messages of love and support on here.”
