Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee pardoned Jelly Roll for previous criminal charges on Thursday (December 18).
Jelly Roll, 41, whose real name is Jason DeFord, was one of 33 people to receive pardons from the governor. Lee told journalists on Thursday, per the Associated Press, that Jelly Roll’s “story is remarkable, and it’s a redemptive, powerful story, which is what you look for and what you hope for.” The 2026 Grammy-nominated artist, whose application to receive a pardon went through the same process as it did for others, reportedly received pardons for robbery and drug felonies. Jelly Roll has been open about his prior struggles, and has since pledged to be “part of the solution.” That includes his support for those in substance abuse recovery, for incarcerated youth, and more. He pointed out that the pardon will make it easier for him to travel internationally, including for faith-based mission work and for global tours, the Associated Press noted.
Jelly Roll’s breakout country album was Whitsitt Chapel in June 2023. The album included “Halfway To Hell,” “Save Me” with Lainey Wilson, “Need A Favor” and more. He followed it with Beautifully Broken last year, featuring “Liar,” “Heart of Stone,” “I Am Not Okay” and other tracks. Earlier this year, he joined Christian singer-songwriter Brandon Lake on a collaborative version of “Hard Fought Hallelujah.”
