Jake Owen tearfully spoke about his newest project — a musical chapter unlike any other in his career — during a “shockingly emotional” conversation on Rolling Stone’s Nashville Now podcast.

Rolling Stone deemed Owen “one of the architects of bro country,” spotlighting some of his most memorable hits over the years like “Barefoot Blue Jean Night,” “The One That Got Away,” and more. “But on his new album of outlaw country songs, he buries his bro persona,” reads the episode description.

“A lot of my music has had a big f***ing curtain right in front of it. It’s like fantasyland. There’s not been a lot of full honesty,” Owen said in an emotional moment in the conversation, which Rolling Stone shared on Instagram on Wednesday (November 19). “Yall got me in my feels,” Owen replied in the comments.

Owen released Dreams to Dream earlier this month. The 13-track record, created with record producer Shooter Jennings, arrives nearly two decades into the Florida-born country star’s career. It features the title track, “Them Old Love Songs” with Savannah Conley (a nod to late legend Waylon Jennings), “Long Time Lovin’ You,” and more. He said, in part, ahead of the album’s debut, “sometimes we can all be a little tough on ourselves, and it’s moments like this that I just want you to know, whether it’s me or whether it’s anyone in life, just remind people sometimes that you’re proud of them and you love them. It’s lifted me up to a place that I can’t thank you guys enough.”
