Dan + Shay shared an update after receiving an overwhelming response from social media commenters on a cover of a Taylor Swift ballad.

Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney shared on Instagram on Friday (October 10) that they “did an impromptu cover of Back To December by [Taylor Swift] at soundcheck the other day and a lot of people asked for a full version. Well, we heard you (and we had today off), so we’re heading into the studio to record one. Gonna try to turn it around as quickly as we can, so stay tuned for updates on our progress!”

Dan + Shay said “Back to December” is “such a great song,” when they shard the impromptu rendition on TikTok on September 29. Swift originally released “Back to December” on Speak Now in 2010, and again on Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) in 2023. Swift announced in a heartfelt statement earlier this year that she officially owns all of her music. Now, Swift is officially in her The Life of a Showgirl era. Her highly-anticipated 12th studio record arrived on October 3.

Dan + Shay explained their unplanned “hiatus” from social media in another update earlier this month. Smyers said, in part, that “we’ve just been buried in the studio and forgot to post on socials.” He confirmed Dan + Shay have a new Christmas song in the works, and “there might also be a couple other little surprises that happen between now and the end of the year. Stay tuned. We’ll be teasing them soon. …We’re fired up. 2026 is gonna be huge for us.”
