Lauren Alaina shared a throwback video on Wednesday (January 29) that she recorded while she was still keeping her pregnancy a secret.
The country star and former American Idol runner-up debuted her baby bump for the first time in the precious music video for her new single, “Those Kind Of Women.” Alaina, 30, spoke about her baby, the song, the music video “and keeping my best secret yet,” while she got ready for a show.
“Get ready with me and help me pray about hiding my 20-week pregnancy,” Alaina said. She stepped back, turned to the side to offer a glimpse of her growing baby bump, and said “boom, baby!” She recorded the GRWM video two weeks before she planned to announce she and husband Cam Arnold are expecting Baby No. 1. “By the time you see this, you will know that I’m pregnant. We’re announcing it with my new song, ‘Those Kind Of Women.’ And the music video, if you haven’t seen it, please go watch it. It’s so sweet. My mom’s in it. This little nugget’s in it,” she said, cradling her baby bump. “It’s a very sweet video. Check it out.
“‘Those Kind Of Women’ is all about the women who made me who I am, who raised me, and when I recorded this song, I was not pregnant. (I) was not planning on getting pregnant. (It was a) nice little surprise,” Alaina continued. “We had recorded so many other songs that we thought we would release first, and then it was alike a little God nod to celebrate the pregnancy and all the women that made me who I am, now that I’m going to be a woman raising a child. I’ve always been very close with my mom. She’s a wonderful mother. But this season of life with me being pregnant, sharing it with her, has made us even closer. It’s the sweetest thing ever, and I wanted to incorporate that in the video for ‘Those Kind Of Women.’ So, I tell the story of me with my mother as a younger mother, growing up to the point of me being pregnant, and it’s so sweet.”
Although hiding the pregnancy was “very stressful” at times, Alaina said it’s “been so fun because it’s like our own little family secret,” and it’s “my best kept secret to date.” The Georgia-born singer-songwriter also took a moment to remember her late father, J.J. Suddeth. Alaina lost her father over the summer, and said Baby No. 1 has been “such a light in the midst of sadness.”
“It has been such a hard year losing my dad in July. And we weren’t even trying to get pregnant. I truly believe my dad got up there to heaven and said ‘we gotta somehow get a baby involved,’” Alaina said. “The baby is the light of my life, and such a light in the midst of sadness, and what felt like a lot of darkness. So, I’m very much looking forward to Baby Arnold getting here, and I can’t wait to share more.”
One day after announcing her pregnancy, Alaina joined Kelly Clarkson on The Kelly Clarkson Show. The “Road Less Traveled” artist spoke about what it’s been like to keep the pregnancy a secret until her full circle music video premiered, and Clarkson shared advice about touring while pregnant. Alaina will join Rascal Flatts on the trio’s 25th anniversary tour, along with Chris Lane. Alaina said she’s “touring until I’m 34 weeks pregnant.” Most recently, Alaina shared an adorable gender reveal video to announce that Baby No. 1 is a girl. Though she hasn’t publicly revealed Baby No. 1’s name yet, Alaina confirmed in an interview with PEOPLE that she and her husband chose a name inspired by one of their family members.
Alaina is one of the latest country artists to announce she’s expecting a baby this year. “Next Thing You Know” star Jordan Davis announced on Wednesday (January 29) that he and his wife are expecting Baby No. 4. Dan + Shay’s Shay Mooney recently welcomed Baby No. 4 with his wife, and rising singer-songwriter Sarahbeth Taite and her husband welcomed Baby No. 2. Others expecting a child in 2025 include Sam Hunt, HARDY, Elle King and more. See the list of pregnancy announcements here.
