Nate Smith hailed Avril Lavigne “an absolute LEGEND” when he released the duo’s second duet on Monday (September 30).
Smith debuted “Can You Die From A Broken Heart,” a ballad that depicts a former couple in the aftermath of a breakup. It’s one of 16 tracks set to appear on Smith’s soon-to-release studio album, California Gold. The reigning ACM New Male Artist of the Year said it’s “been a hell of a ride collaborating with” the pop-punk icon on two songs.
Earlier this year, Smith and Lavigne took the stage together at the 59th ACM Awards, hosted by Reba McEntire at the world headquarters of the Dallas Cowboys at The Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas. The genre-blending duo delivered the first live performance of the duet version of “Bulletproof,” which Smith had released months earlier. The performance marked the latest time Lavigne took the stage for a country event. She previously performed at the ACM Honors for Shania Twain, and joined Miranda Lambert as a surprise guest during CMA Fest.
Smith’s California Gold follows his self-titled debut album and its deluxe edition. Those collections arrived in April 2023. Smith has since released a 7-track EP, Through the Smoke, his rendition of Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars” and a few of the tracks from his upcoming record.
