Brad Paisley’s newest single offers a nostalgic twist.
Paisley released “Truck Still Works” on Friday (September 27), offering a fresh look at his forthcoming chapter while calling back to his early 2000s anthem, “Mud on the Tires.” “Truck Still Works” opens with the singer reintroducing his Chevy that’s been sitting in the barn, and suggesting “a little test drive down by the lake.” Paisley wrote it with Chris Dubois, Will Bundy, Hunter Phelps and Rodney Clawson, and produced it with Luke Wooten. Paisley said he hopes the new song “takes you back.
“It’s a throwback, but at the same time it’s a new set of wheels. It’s a new road to go down, and it’s the first of many off of the new project,” he said. “I hope you love it. I wanna hear it blasting from somebody’s vehicle at a red light. If you’re a guitar player, learn it. And teach it to me because I need to learn it a little better. And I hope you love it. I hope that it takes you back in time and anybody out there that has something in the barn that needs fired back up, this is for you.”
“‘Truck Still Works’ is a track where everything old is new again,” Paisley said via his record label. “We debated on how much to really allude to the original (‘Mud On The Tires’) and there were questions like ‘Do you moonlight in a duck blind, catfish on a trot line?’ What do you not put in, what’s too much, what is enough and what is not enough? And trust me, we tried each of those and it was really fun. I think it was Chris Dubois’ idea to end the first verse with the line, ‘How about a little test drive down by the lake.’ It was really fun to go through the process of what makes this song both new and old. What I love about it is that the groove, the feel, is all very modern and very country. We hope it’s a blast for anyone who’s a current fan or for someone to become a new fan.”
Paisley delivered the first live performance of “Truck Still Works” on the legendary Grand Ole Opry stage at the 2024 People’s Choice Country Awards on Thursday evening (September 26). He started the performance with an acoustic rendition of “Mud on the Tires” before launching into an energetic debut of “Truck Still Works.” Paisley shared a video on TikTok earlier in the day that captured the moment he heard it on the radio for the first time in his vehicle. the single premiered one day early on iHeartCountry.
