Brantley Gilbert unveiled the story of a toxic relationship, alongside iHeartCountry On The Verge Artist Ashley Cooke. The duo teamed up to officially deliver their new duet, “Over When We’re Sober,” on Friday (June 21), one day after they shared it one day early with a world premiere on iHeartCountry stations.
Gilbert, who’s gearing up to release his seventh studio album, teamed up with Jelly Roll, Brock Berryhill and Justin Wilson to write “Over When We’re Sober.” Gilbert explained that the song “is about those toxic relationships that you forget are toxic when you’re intoxicated… I had so much fun making this song and was so excited that Ashley hopped on it.” Gilbert stirred anticipation for “Over When We’re Sober” when he hinted at a mystery duet partner on his social media pages earlier this month. He quickly confirmed Cooke’s identity and announced the collaboration’s release date. Last month, Cooke caught up with iHeartCountry at the 59th ACM Awards, where she said she has “two collaborations that I’m really excited about coming up very soon.”

Gilbert said his producer, Berryhill, was the person to suggest Cooke as his duet partner on “Over When We’re Sober.” The soon-to-be father of three said he “was so impressed with her writing and her voice,” including on her 24-track debut album, shot in the dark, which released last summer. Cooke said it was a full-circle moment to join Gilbert on a duet, particularly after listening to his music for years and once receiving tickets to his concert as a Christmas gift.
“Over When We’re Sober” is one of “many” collaborations to expect on Gilbert’s forthcoming studio album, according to a press release announcing the duet’s debut. The “You Don’t Know Her Like I Do” artist has been working on his next record for the past two years; however, it wasn’t immediately clear when the full project would arrive. Gilbert released “Off The Rails, which inspired the title of his ongoing tour, earlier this year. See the remaining dates below.
