Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney immediately jumped out of their iconic red chairs on The Voice during Monday night’s blind auditions (March 11) when a singer revealed the first danc song she picked for her wedding next year. Zoe Levert, 20, and her fiancé will share their first dance set to Dan + Shay’s “From The Ground Up.” The duo released the sentimental ballad on their 10-track album, Obsessed, in 2016.
Levert took the stage to perform “Better Man,” a hit song written by Taylor Swift and released by country quartet Little Big Town in 2017. Though the country artists serving as coaches this season — Dan + Shay and Reba McEntire — didn’t turn their chairs, John Legend hit the buzzer at the last minute to claim the New Orleans, Louisiana-based singer for his team. Smyers and Mooney both applauded Levert’s performance and song choice as they welcomed her to The Voice.
“I did want to tell y’all, Dan + Shay, I am a huge fan of y’all, and I’m getting married next year — my fiancé’s here — our first dance song is ‘From The Ground Up,’” Levert told the award-winning duo. Smyers and Mooney exclaimed “no way,” and “are you serious,” and promptly invited Levert’s fiancé, Ryan, to join her on stage. Legend said he loved the idea as the audience cheered, and the first-ever coaching duo delivered a stunning acoustic rendition of “From The Ground Up” as a rehearsal for the couple’s first dance.
“Now I’m gonna cry. This is a great moment,” coach Chance the Rapper said, and began recording the performance and dance on his phone.
“It’s abundantly clear that if you had a choice to pick Dan + Shay you would’ve picked them,” Legend said, though Levert assured she’s a proud member of Team Legend (Mooney replied that they “still have room for a steal”). “Im so happy for you for everything that’s happening in your life. I’m so happy you got to be serenaded by these amazing artists over here. Only on The Voice, folks. Only on The Voice. …I’m excited that you’re on Team Legend.”
