Carrie Underwood relates to the heartache of watching an ex-boyfriend move on with someone new, while she holds onto the memories with her former flame that his current girlfriend will never experience. “Give Her That” is the latest track to make its debut from Underwood’s highly-anticipated deluxe album that’s slated to release next month.

Underwood’s powerful ballad sees the singer acknowledging that although her ex’s new girlfriend might be beautiful, charming and a a significant part of his future, he can’t give her the same relationship he had in the past. Underwood, who wrote the song with David Garcia and Lydia Vaughan, knows that he “can't give her that/ Old school Skynyrd tee that I still sleep in/ Your mama's necklace, 'cause she wanted me to keep it/ Every kiss, every minute that you spent on me/ Every memory/ You can't give her those/ Wild summer nights where I learned all your secrets/ Those 'I love you''s that already fell off your lips/ That part of your heart that you gave me and you can't get back/ You can't give her that.”

“‘Give Her That’ is a story about a relationship that is no longer, and the person’s kind of moved on. It’s like, ‘I see who you’re with. She’s beautiful. She’s perfect. I’ll give her that. But you can’t give her the time that we spent together.’ I feel like everybody’s kind of got some of that in their lives, if you’re stalking somebody on socials or something like that. Like, they’ve moved on…but I had him first,” Underwood said with a laugh. “When we wrote ‘Give Her That,’ (we) kind of had ended up with two versions: one that was super chill, super stripped down, and then one that had a little more of like a bass-y kind of groove to it. (The) stripped down version felt more right to the song.”

Underwood surprised fans when she revealed on her social media channels on Wednesday night (August 9) that she would release another track from the Denim & Rhinestones deluxe edition. The extended version will add six new tracks to the original 12-track album. Underwood previously released the nostalgic breakup anthem “Out Of That Truck” and the romantic “Take Me Out” ahead of the deluxe album’s release.

Denim & Rhinestones was known for anthems like “Ghost Story,” “Hate My Heart,” “Crazy Angels,” the title track and more. Underwood said last year that the album is unique for its “‘throwback’ type songs, but they sound so super fresh,” drawing from genre-spanning influences she’s listened to throughout her life. “I feel like this (album) ended up being a bigger reflection of me as a person, as an artist. I grew up listening to so many different kinds of music. I feel like that is extremely evident in this body of work. …I really just wanted to make an album that just felt like fun.”

The deluxe edition of Denim & Rhinestones is due on September 22. Listen to Underwood’s new track from the project here:
