Tanya Tucker wrote a heartbreaking tribute to Loretta Lynn, knowing that her world “will never be the same again.” Tucker took to Instagram to honor the late country music legend, whose family said in a statement that she passed away peacefully at her Tennessee ranch on Tuesday morning (October 4). She was 90.

Tucker remembers Lynn as her “hero,” and a best friend with whom she often exchanged flowers. Tucker wrote in her heartfelt message:

“Today, my world changed and it will never be the same again. My hero [Loretta Lynn] got her wings and it's been a day filled with tears. Many memories, so much gratitude and thanking my God above for blessing me first with her music and her guidance through the perils of the music world, way before we ever met. I looked up to Loretta always. Then we became best friends, she brought me flowers always and I brought flowers to her. Time has let me share many special moments with her, I even named my horse after her, but now time has taken her from me forever! But she's left me with so much to remember and cling on to. I thank God above that I got to sing with her on her latest record. I've been waiting a long time for that to come to pass. I was busy planning a much-needed trip to Mexico when I got the news, but for now Mexico will have to wait because my childhood hero Loretta Lynn has caught the train and she's 'On Her Way to Heaven.' Mexico will always be there, but my friend has gone on to glory. I will see her there someday! I miss you so Retti! I think you know how I feel! Your girl always. -Tanya❤️🌹”

Tucker’s sweet post drew supportive messages from fans, friends and fellow country artists. Martina McBride, who shared a tribute of her own, commented with a few hearts. Brandi Carlile hailed Lynn and Tucker “two peas in a pod,” adding that she’ll “always think of you when I think of her.” Margo Price remembered Lynn “was tough as nails and sweet as sugar all at the same time, and so are you.”

Lynn’s family said in a statement on Tuesday morning: “Our precious mom, Loretta Lynn, passed away peacefully this morning, October 4th, in her sleep at home at her beloved ranch in Hurricane Mills.” The family asked for privacy as they grieve, and noted that a public announcement would be made at a later time about a memorial for the country music legend.
