LeAnn Rimes performed a song powerful enough to bring listeners — and even herself — to tears. But, she said with a laugh, “communal crying is good for the soul.”
Rimes performed “innocent” on TODAY with Hoda & Jenna, one of her newest songs that released on her album god’s work earlier this month. She admitted when she shared a clip of the performance on Instagram on Thursday (September 22) that it’s an emotional song, and seeing hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager react to it made all the difference: “i’m not sure how i made it through this performance without crying, but after seeing [Kotb] & [Hager], I lost it… communal crying is good for the soul lol…”
Rimes released god’s work on September 16, “a beautiful journey” – three years in the making – and serves as the dawn of a “new chapter” for the award-winning artist. She previously explained that she opted to keep the album and song titles all lowercased because, “if we’re arguing about why the ‘g’ is or isn’t capitalized, we’re missing the whole point. It’s so important for us to focus on the messages, rather than the nuances.” She spoke about the project with iHeartRadio when it released. Read her Q&A here.
god’s work also includes “spaceship,” “the only,” “awakening,” “the wild” and other powerful, fan-favorite tracks. Watch Rimes’ full performance of “innocent” on TODAY with Hoda & Jenna here, and see her Instagram post below:
