Carrie Underwood premiered a haunting alternate version of her cinematic music video, “Ghost Story.” The chilling revenge anthem is one that the powerhouse singer-songwriter knew she wanted to take “over the top” to kick off a new era.

“Ghost Story” was the first single Underwood released from her Denim & Rhinestones album. The 12-track collection is one that aims to “cover a lot of ground” as it encompasses vast influences of music that Underwood has listened to throughout her life. Underwood previously explained that the album “ended up being a bigger reflection of me as a person, as an artist. I grew up listening to so many different kinds of music. I feel like that is extremely evident in this body of work.”

The project’s first single, “Ghost Story,” was written by Josh KearHillary Lindsey and David Garcia. Underwood said she immediately loved the “really powerful revenge song… But this time instead of smashing his headlights with a baseball bat, she’s just going to haunt his every waking moment. She’s not just the one that got away, but she’s the one that he cannot forget.”

“The music video, if you’re gonna usher in a new era, I want to do it big,” Underwood said in a statement shared by her record label, explaining how the cinematic music video is like an entire movie packed into just a few minutes. “That one I was like we can kind of go over the top, but that’s what we wanted. We wanted it to be beautiful and imaginative, because I feel like the song is, so a lot of really great imagery that’s written into the song and we just wanted to kind of bring that to life.”

When she debuted the alternate music video, Underwood wanted to know: “How many differences can you spot?
