Keith Urban caught up with Jenna Bush Hager and Michelle Buteau on TODAY with Hoda & Jenna, and the country music giant explained the story behind a video with Nicole Kidman that went viral.
Urban brought his wife on stage last month as he wrapped up his Las Vegas residency at The Colosseum at Caesar’s Palace. The crowd applauded and cheered during the sweet moment, especially when the award-winning actress introduced herself as “Nicole Urban.” The heartwarming couple recently celebrated their 16th anniversary together.
But Kidman had another intention when she stepped out on stage that night, and Hager couldn’t resist asking about it when she spoke with Urban on Thursday (June 30). Urban explained that Kidman was determined to come on stage to retrieve his jacket that he took off earlier in the show. She was concerned he would lose it, he recalled:
“We’re doing gigs in Vegas, and come out wearing a jacket, kind of looking a bit more formal, you know? And after two songs, you know, you take the jacket off. And Nic said to me, she goes, ‘Do you ever lose that jacket? Where do you put — what happens to your jacket?’ And I go, ‘I don’t know, it makes its way back to the dressing room every night. I don’t know who gets it. Somebody gets it.’ And she goes, ‘You’re going to lose it!’ And I go, ‘I will never… It never gets lost.’ And so, when I had her come out on stage, she goes, ‘I’m worried about your jacket,’ and I bring it up and go, ‘it’s right—’ and it was gone. The one night!”
Replaying the now-viral clip, Kidman can be heard saying into the microphone, “I want to get your jacket, you put it on the floor.” Her superstar husband walks her across the stage to find that it’s gone, and Urban further commented, “She literally said, ‘Don’t lose that jacket.’ …It’s gone! See? Look. You jinxed it!”
Luckily, the missing jacket turned up. Urban wrapped it around Kidman’s shoulders as she wore it offstage. Of course, Hager declared, “she’s always right!”
Urban also performed on the TODAY show on Thursday morning, including “Blue Ain’t Your Color,” “Wasted Time” and others. He also teased his performance of “Brown Eyes Baby,” a song that he’s played on the first few nights of his tour that’s set to release on July 8.
