When Conner Smith found out he would make his debut at the Grand Ole Opry, he immediately initiated a video call to deliver the exciting news to his parents — and they knew their son was realizing a longtime dream.

“Somewhere in a drawer or a folder, I have your goals listed,” Smith’s mom said on the call. “That was one of ‘em. Like, 15 years old, (you) wrote it down on paper in your handwriting to play at the Grand Ol Opry. I can’t even…”

Smith announced his upcoming Opry debut on his social media channels on Tuesday (May 3). In a video, Smith recalled prepping for what he thought was a “radio interview” on March 29. Instead, Smith was on a call with a few representatives from his record label and country superstar Thomas Rhett. Rhett is the one who told Smith, “the Grand Ole Opry’s asked you to make your debut on May the 28th. …Make sure you go tell everybody in the studio what’s happening.”

That’s when Smith realized, “I gotta call my mama first.”

When Smith called his parents to tell them he would play the Grand Ole Opry, both of their jaws dropped. “First song I ever wrote was at 7 years old after I went to the Grand Ole Opry,” Smith reflected. “Gonna be a special moment.” See his announcement here:
