Carrie Underwood won a GRAMMY Award for Best Roots Gospel Album, and she emotionally explained why the recognition means so much to her. Underwood knew “I’m probably immediately gonna start crying” as she spoke about her award-winning debut gospel album, My Savior

“I feel like it’s more important because I feel like this is one of the most important bodies of work I’ve ever been a part of, been able to do,” she said with a breaking voice as she held back tears. “This is one thing that I’ve wanted to do literally my whole career. I’ve wanted to make this album, and I got to, and this just means the world to me.

“Man, I didn’t last any length of time, did I?” Underwood added with a smile, noting her emotional reaction to her latest victory. She further expressed her gratitude on her social media channels on Monday morning (April 4):

“I WON A GRAMMY!!!!! I love this album ( #MySavior ) so much and I truly believe it is the most important album I have ever made! Thanks to all who supported! I am eternally grateful! Glory to God! AND I got to sing #GhostStory for the first time on the @recordingacademy stage! What a night… #Grammys #Blessed #grateful

Underwood released My Savior last year, marking her eighth full-length record and first gospel album. The project included beloved tracks like “Softly And Tenderly,” “How Great Thou Art,” “Amazing Grace,” and others. Underwood, an eight-time GRAMMY Award winner, reflected on growing up singing in church, deeming her long-awaited gospel album a “full-circle moment” in her career. “I’ve had so many people over the past year just come up to me and say, ‘I needed this,’ and I needed it, too. I needed to sing it, and I really did it selfishly, just for myself, but I’m really glad that people connected with it. It just means a lot to me.”

The “Cry Pretty” singer also took the stage at the 64th GRAMMY Awards on Sunday evening (April 3) with a stunning debut performance of her latest country single, “Ghost Story.” Underwood debuted the song on March 18 after a few weeks of teasing a new release. She previously explained that the haunting revenge anthem is unique because “this time instead of smashing his headlights with a baseball bat, she’s just going to haunt his every waking moment,” Underwood said. “She’s not just the one that got away, but she’s the one that he cannot forget.”
