Maren Morris delves into the haunting beauty of acknowledging that everything in life is temporary with her new song. The singer-songwriter debuted “Background Music” on Friday (February 11), after sharing snippets of the track on her social media channels for more than a week.

“I wrote this about the beauty of the temporary, which is inevitably all things. The romanticism of eternity sounds nice, but I like to think I savor things better when I know I’m not entitled to it in perpetuity,” Morris explained on Instagram when the song released. “It’s a love song that addresses mortality but it’s also promising someone that even when we aren’t cool anymore, I want to grow old with them and laugh about the times we thought we were.”

Morris credited songwriters Laura Veltz and Jimmy Robbins with “helping me write this loaded emotion to life.” “Background Music” becomes the second single to release from her highly-anticipated next album, Humble Quest, which is due out net month. The latest release follows “Circles Around This Town,” Morris’ autobiographical take on her humble beginnings in Nashville (and reflecting on major career milestones since then).

Announcing her upcoming project, Morris candidly reflected on her feelings of losing control during the pandemic, and her quest to define what the word “humble” means to her. The result was “the stories of my rises, my overshares, my appreciation of Midwestern guys who stand at least a foot taller than me, my lullabies, my wine-soaked conversations with a dear friend and my final goodbye to one.” Humble Quest is due out on March 25.

Morris is one of many artists included in the star-studded lineup at the iHeartCountry Festival presented by Capital One, set for May 7 in Austin, Texas. Fans can tune in and stream the 2022 iHeartCountry Festival on iHeartMedia's Country music radio stations in local markets across the country, as well as on iHeartRadio.com and the iHeartRadio app on May 7th at 8pm ET/5pm PT (7pm CT).
