Ed Sheeran Lands First Big Movie Role, As Himself

Ed Sheeran's first role on the big screen will be second nature.

The Associated Press announced the report Thursday (August 30) that the 27-year-old British crooner would play himself in an upcoming (untitled) film helmed by Danny Boyle. It will be the "Shape of You" star's first part on the big screen.

Written by Richard Curtis, the movie concentrates on a singer-songwriter who wakes to the reality of being the only person in the world who remembers The Beatles. That's when Sheeran steps in.

“And then I discover him and take him on tour. Then he gets much, much bigger than me through doing stuff. Yeah, it’s very clever,” the Grammy-winning artist told AP. “I got to actually kind of learn how to act. ... With the ‘Game of Thrones’ thing, that was literally me popping in for a day and making a cameo. Or ‘Bastard Executioner’ was me popping in for a day. But this was like full days on set, like full 12-hour days.”

The musician explained the "intense two months" he spent filming earlier in the year would often overlap dates of his "÷ Tour," saying, "I would have four days of gigging and then three days of shooting a film. I was playing myself, so I don’t think I was that bad. There wasn’t much to (mess) up.”

The 27-year-old's previous on-screen features have mostly been limited to television, save for a small film bit in Bridget Jones's Baby (2016).

The unnamed Danny Boyle film is slated for September 2019 release.
