Paul McCartney Recalls Being Jailed for Drug Smuggling in Japan

Paul McCartney reminisced about the time he spent in jail after being arrested for possession of marijuana in Japan in 1980.

McCartney's recalled how his tour came to a screeching halt after Japanese authorities found pot in his belongings while he was going through customs.

The former Beatle spent nine days in jail in the "scary" ordeal, which he recalled to The Late Late Show's James Corden on the extended version of his hit "Carpool Karaoke" episode that aired earlier this week.

"He says, 'Seven years hard labor,'" McCartney said. "And actually, that was the sentence for what I'd done."

What McCartney had done, in the eyes of Japanese authorities, was try to smuggle drugs into the country.

But the singer made the best of situation. He recalled making friends with some fellow inmates, sharing a communal bath and trying to be the most well-behaved prisoner.

Eventually, authorities took pity on the singer (he believes because he was famous) and released him from jail.

McCartney has previously recalled how he was cautioned against bringing weed into Japan prior to that fateful trip.
