A large Baptism ceremony in Ethiopia ended in tragedy after a crocodile jumped from the lake and killed the pastor on Sunday. Pastor Docho Eshete had just started baptizing 80 members of his Protestant congregation at Lake Abaya, in the southern part of the country when he was snatched by the crocodile and dragged him toward the lake.

"He baptized the first person, and he passed on to another one. All of a sudden, a crocodile jumped out of the lake and grabbed the pastor,” a local resident who was attending the ceremony told the BBC.

Members of the congregation along with fishermen and local residents attempted to save him, but he died from his injuries. They had to use fishing nets to keep the crocodile from dragging his lifeless body away. While the rescuers attempted to save his body, the crocodile managed to escape back into the water.

The area near Lake Abaya is known to have "a large population of crocodiles, which are said to be aggressive towards people."
