Carly Pearce shared her stunning cover of an emotional ballad that Cam debuted in 2105.
Pearce stood in a bathroom stall as she delivered her rendition of “Burning House,” and reflected on the moment she first heard the hit single nearly a decade ago. The hummingbird star wrote in her caption on Instagram: “I still remember the first time I heard this song and still think it’s one of the best of the last 10 years. @camcountry (ps the toilet flushed immediately when we finished recording haha)”
Cam included “Burning House” on Untamed, her 11-track album that released nearly a decade ago. The California-born singer-songwriter said the story behind the song seemed from a dream she had about an ex after their breakup. Cam shared at that time that she and her ex dated off and on in college, and although they loved one another, they weren’t right for each other long-term. Cam said she “felt really bad” about the breakup, and the following year, the pair would see one another again at a mutual friend’s party.
“The night before, I was planning how I would say sorry,” Cam explained at that time. “I thought exactly how I would do it, and I thought so much about it. I had this dream and it was about a burning house. He was in it, and I ran out to this house and everyone was like, ‘don’t go in this house. He’s in there, but you can’t save him.’ I was like, ‘I don’t care,’ and I went inside… There was no way to get him out, but instead of leaving and letting him die alone, I decided to just stay and just hold him so he wouldn’t have to die alone. And I think (I felt) so much guilt I had for treating him that way even though he was such an important person to me.”
Cam shared her reaction to Pearce’s “Burning House” cover, commenting on Instagram on Monday morning (November 11): “🥹 i remember how i felt when i first heard every little thing. Kinda held my breath so i wouldn’t miss anything as it played ❤️ you deliver sadness so well, and that’s my favorite kind of country.”
Pearce released “Every Little Thing” in 2017. It served as the title track of her debut album, which also included “Hide The Wine” and more. Most recently, Pearce released hummingbird, a 14-track album with “country music made me do it,” “truck on fire,” “we don’t fight anymore” with Chris Stapleton, and other highlights.
