Megan Moroney released her stunning cover of a heartache ballad originally released by one of the genre’s most powerful singer-songwriter’s, Chris Stapleton. Moroney’s spin on “What Are You Listening To?,” Stapleton’s debut single that released more than 10 years ago, is available Friday (January 5).
Stapleton, the reigning Academy of Country Music Entertainer of the Year, released the storytelling ballad prior to his first-ever full-length album, Traveller, in 2015. Stapleton’s song tells the story of a man who feels as if he’s going “back in time” as he listens to a song that reminds him of a former flame. He can’t help but wonder as he thinks of her, “What Are You Listening To?”
“What are you listening to?/ Is it a cover band in some college town bar?/ Where it's na-na-na's and air guitars/ Or is it something to get you through?/ Just a sad song playing on the radio station/ Tears still fallin' and hearts still breakin’/ ‘Cause you're hanging on/ Or is it a love song about someone new?/ What are you listening to?”
Moroney capped off an eventful 2023 in the star-studded lineup of the annual New Year’s Eve bash in Nashville, Tennessee. During a recent interview with iHeartCountry, the Georgia-born artist teased new music coming in 2024, and looked ahead to joining country giant Kenny Chesney on his headlining stadium tour, which kicks off in April.
