Reese Witherspoon, Kacey Musgraves, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson and others delve into stories behind music legend June Carter Cash’s life and career in a star-studded documentary. The trailer for the soon-to-premiere film made its debut on Wednesday (January 3).

The one-minute, 45-second trailer previews “the story of talent, ambition, heartbreak and loyalty.” Carter Cash is known as “a bada** b****, first off,” Musgraves said at the opening of the trailer, which includes images and footage throughout Carter Cash’s historic career in music. Interviews with Larry Gatlin, Robert Duvall, Ronnie Dunn, country artist and daughter Carlene Carter, and others appear throughout the documentary.

“I don’t know if a lot of people know that she wrote ‘Ring of Fire,’” Witherspoon, who played Carter Cash in Walk the Line (2005), said in the trailer, followed by further confirmation by artist manager and music executive Vicky Hamilton. Carter Cash’s husband, fellow music legend Johnny Cash, recorded the iconic song in the 1960s. The documentary trailer, of course, also spotlighted Carter Cash’s relationship with her husband. Nelson noted in the trailer, “you gotta be tough,” to be married to Johnny Cash.

The Kristen Vaurio-directed documentary, June, “shines an important spotlight on the history of country music and the mark the Carter and Cash families made on the genre before diving into the complex life of the legendary June Carter Cash,” reads a Paramount+ press release issued Wednesday. “Perhaps at times overshadowed by her iconic husband Johnny Cash, the time is now for June to take center stage.”

June will include rare and never-before-seen material throughout the documentary. It’s set to premiere on Paramount+ on Tuesday, January 16. Watch the trailer here (warning: language):
