Kenny Chesney announced a new effort to help rescue dogs after his own dog, Ruby, died earlier this week. Chesney took to his social media channels to remember Ruby — “Da Ruba Girl” — and to explain how he’s directing money to a nonprofit rescue organization in her memory.

Ruby was an unbelievable dog. She meant a whole lot to a whole lot of people,” Chesney said. “And, I wrote a song several years ago about our life with Ruby, about my life with Ruby and what she meant to me, and… over the years, we’ve had a lot of requests that we make that available for people. I’m not sure why I didn’t but now we are.”

Chesney explained that he’s releasing “Da Ruba Girl” on all streaming platforms on Friday (December 9). He pledged that all proceeds from the song will go to Stray Rescue of St. Louis.

“I’m very excited about that,” he continued. “What I’m more excited about is, Ruby’s life gets to mean something. …Ruby’s life is gonna pay it forward, if you will, through this song. … I’m very, very proud of that.”

Chesney announced on Sunday (December 4) that Ruby died after a battle with cancer. He wrote in a heartfelt tribute, in part: “Ruby lived her life never holding anything against anybody. She had an ancient, calming soul. She was honest and authentic, she was a protector, she took a warrior’s path in the journey of her life. …So bye-bye, Ruby. You were a very good girl. We loved you and thank you for teaching us how to love unconditionally. You were one heaven of a dog.”
