Maren Morris revealed a question that keeps her up at night, and it has Twitter talking. Although she thought she might have bigger things to bear in mind with her long-awaited album release coming up, Morris couldn’t stop pondering a common phrase: “I know I have an album coming out soon and that’s exciting but what really keeps me up at night is wondering if it’s ‘cards close to your chest’ or ‘vest?’”

Of course, Morris’ followers couldn’t help but weigh in. One said, “omg wait i’ve only ever heard chest what is the significance of vest?????” Morris replied to her: “I don’t know but I hear them used equally and I want an answer. Was the dealer wearing a vest and that’s why it’s significant? I’m not even high, I just have so many questions.”

Another wondered whether it would depend on the setting of the card game, suggesting a difference between a black-tie event and a house party. Another said, “i’d think chest so that people can’t look at your cards?? ignore me, i just work in a casino but i don’t actually know anything.”

Others, however, perhaps offered the answer to the country artist’s question. “This is random trivia from a Wyoming history teacher: The expressions tarted as when poker/gambling was being banned in some western towns as ‘… Keep your cards close to your vest buttons’. That turned into ‘… close to your vest’. That turned into ‘… Close to your chest’.” Another Twitter user said: “The answer: Both. There is no definitive answer to this question. While it appears that ‘close to the vest’ appeared first, ‘close to the chest’ followed almost immediately, and today, both are used with equal frequency.”

For what it’s worth to anyone still wondering, Merriam-Webster’s definition of the idiom includes both “chest” and “vest.”

Morris is gearing up to release her next album this month, a collection of “the most authentic and light lyrics that have ever flowed from my pen.” Since announcing the project earlier this year, Morris has released a few songs form the album, including “Circles Around This Town,” “Background Music,” and “Nervous.” Humble Quest is set to release on March 25.
